Midterm: Writing section of exam

What we did in class, today – I announced that the reading section of the midterm exam has been marked and marks are in SIS. Students wanting to review their reading exams must see me during my office hours on either Sunday (11:00-11:50) or Monday (10:00-10:50) in W1-170. We reviewed the homework for this week and next week. Afterwards, students wrote the composition section of the midterm exam.

Achieve3000 Competition

Students who score at least 75 on 10 readings during the period Wednesday, Nov. 11, through Friday, Nov. 20, will receive 1/2% bonus credit.


  • Read two Achieve3000 articles of your choice and complete the activities for the two articles before 11:55 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13.
  • Go to your Achieve3000 mailbox. Read the two messages I sent you today. The subject line for both is Unit Assignment: Robots. The first e-mail instructs you to read “The Robot Hotel.” The second message instructs you to read “Robots in School.” After read the “Robots in School” and completing the Activity, students are to go to the Thought Question. Disregard the instructions. Instead, synthesize the information in this article (“Robots in School”) and the “The Robot Hotel” to write a one-paragraph cause and effect paragraph. The due date for this assignment is before 11:55 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13.
  • Continue revising your cause / effect essay, which is due no later than 11:55 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19.

What we will do in class on Monday, Nov. 16 – We will continue working on Essay 2, so be sure to bring your laptop, power cord, flash memory, and textbook. We will also be covering pp. 149-154 in Great Writing: From Great Essays to Research.
