The cause and effect essay

What we did in class, today – We began studying cause and effect essays (p. 132-137 in Great Essays 5). Then, after watching Insert Coin: Part 5 – Violence in Video Games, students completed the “Effects of Violent Videos” handout. Students were asked to write a one-paragraph summary of the film based on the handout. They are to write their summary in  MyGUST (see “One-Paragraph Summary” assignment during the week of 28 February – 5 March). They were also asked to download and print “Model Cause and Effect Sentences” and “Language of Cause and Effect” before class on Thursday.

Bonus Credit Opportunities

  • For each 45-minute tutoring session in the English Department’s Writing Lab, students will receive 1/2% bonus credit, for a maximum of 5% bonus credit. (See MyGUST for details.)
  • Students who receive 75 or above on 10 Achieve3000 reading activities (first attempt) between Feb. 28 and 11:59 p.m. on March 11 will earn 1/2% bonus credit.

Homework

  • Watch Insert Coin: Part 5 – Violence in Video GamesThen write a one-paragraph summary of the film based on “Effects of Violent Videos” handout. Write your summary in  MyGUST (see “One-Paragraph Summary” assignment during the week of 28 February – 5 March).
  • Download and print “Model Cause and Effect Sentences” and “Language of Cause and Effect” before class on Thursday.
  • For Achieve3000 this week, you may choose the three articles I assigned you via e-mail in your Achieve3000 in-box (“Global Upheavals: Aloha, Senator Inouye,” “Earth’s Cousin,” and “Put Down That Doughnut”) or you may use the Achieve3000 search engine to find articles. However, you must read three Achieve3000 articles and complete at least three Achieve3000 Activities before 11:55 p.m. on Friday, March 4.
  • Vocabulary Quiz 4 is based on “Global Upheavals: Aloha, Senator Inouye,” “Earth’s Cousin,” and “Put Down That Doughnut.” Memorize these words and how they are used in sentences, for there will be an on-line vocabulary quiz available in MyGUST until midnight on Friday, March 4. Vocabulary Quiz 4 will include words from Week 1Week 2Week 3Week 4 Week 5 and Week 6 vocabulary lists. (Click here for the Week 6 vocabulary with their Arabic synonyms.)

What we will do in class on Thursday, March 3 – We will write and submit our outlines for Essay 2.
