Speed writing

What we did today – Students practiced speed writing. Below is a rubric for marking the speed writing exercise. The exercise had to be completed in class in order to earn marks. The Language of Argument words had to be bolded.

  • Write 500-600 words and use three of the Language of Argument words in each of the five paragraphs = 5
  • Write 400-499 words and use three of the Language of Argument words in each of the five paragraphs = 4
  • Write 300-399 words and use three of the Language of Argument words in each of the five paragraphs = 3
  • Write 200-299 words and use three of the Language of Argument words in each of the five paragraphs = 2
  • Write 100-199 words and use three of the Language of Argument words in each of the five paragraphs = 1

Bonus Credit Opportunities

  1. If you contribute five or more children’s books to the Book Drive for Syrian Refugee Children, you will receive 1/2% bonus credit. Tuesday, May 4, is the last day to contribute. To receive credit, you must bring your books to class or to my office (during my office hours).
  2. For each 45-minute tutoring session in the English Department’s Writing Lab, students will receive 1/2% bonus credit, for a maximum of 5% bonus credit. (See MyGUST for details.) The work for this week must be in connection with Academic Writing Wizard. Only people who submit a paper to AWW will receive credit for this week.
  3. Students  may earn 1% bonus credit by using Academic Writing Wizard (AWW) to revise the papers shown below. Ms. Rawan in the Writing Lab is available to assist you. Be sure to take your bonus credit form with you. Click here for step-by-step instructions for using AWW. You can also view the step-by-step guidelines in the AWW Youtube video. The deadline for completion of the revision is Friday, April 28. You must submit your bonus credit form no later than Sunday, May 1.
  • ENGL 100 Section 8 – Paper 2 (Cause and Effect)
  • ENGL 100 Section 55 – Paper 3 (Argumentative Paper)

Final Exam – For the writing section of the final exam, students will write a five-paragraph essay on an unannounced topic, on May 2 at the following times:

  • Section 8 – May 2 at 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 in N3-201
  • Section 55 – May 2 at 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in N3-201

What we will do in class on Monday, May 1 – We will the writing section of the final exam, and I will announce my office hours to conference regarding the final exam.
