Sections 12 and 13 (Monday): Combining sentences and speed writing

What we did in class today  – Students reviewed combining sentences – with particular emphasis on appositive, participial phrases, and absolute phrases –  for more effective writing. In MyGUST, students completed Activity 10. They used “speed writing” techniques to write a five-paragraph essay to practice for the midterm essay. They were allowed to use the handout Language of Process. There were four marks possible. Criteria for the four marks is as follows:

  • 400+ words and three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 4 marks
  • 400+ words without using three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 3 marks
  • 300-399 words and three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 3 marks
  • 300-399 words without using three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 2 marks
  • 200-299 words and three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 2 marks
  • 200-299 words without using three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 1 mark
  • 100-199 words and three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 1 mark
  • 100-199 words without using three of the Language of Process words in each of the five paragraphs = 0 mark

Homework – Read Achieve3000 article A Pink Lizard and a Striped Fish”and complete the Activity and Thought Question (a one-paragraph summary of the article) before midnight on Friday, Oct. 28.  (This will be Thought Question 4.) Read two other Achieve3000 articles of your choice and complete the Activities for them before midnight on Friday, Oct. 28. (If you want to read extra articles, use the Achieve3000 search engine to locate other articles.)

Midterm Exam – Students will complete the reading section of the midterm exam on Monday, Nov. 7, and the writing section of the exam on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Each part of the exam will be 50 minutes. The reading section will require students to read two articles and answer questions about them. The writing section will be a five-paragraph descriptive process essay. Students will have two writing prompts from which to choose.

Bonus Credit – Reading contest 2 – The contest covers the time period from Saturday, Oct 22, through Friday, Nov 4. This is for 0.5% extra credit. To receive credit, you must score 75 or above on Activities for 10 Achieve3000 articles. Only first attempt scores will count.

What we will do in class on Wednesday, Oct 26 – We will continue editing our papers, and we will practice “speed writing” so that we will be prepared for the midterm exam and the final exam.
