Section 6 (Tuesday): Midterm reading exam

What we did in class today  – Students took the midterm reading exam.

Midterm Exam – Students will complete the writing section of the midterm exam on Thursday, Nov. 10 The time limit is 50 minutes. The writing section will be a five-paragraph descriptive process essay. Students will have two writing prompts from which to choose. Here are some tips on how to do well on the writing midterm exam:

  • Be on time.
  • Download the essay template before class.
  • Bring your laptop, power cord, and flash memory.
  • You are to choose ONE of the two writing prompts and write an argument essay in response to it. Before you make your choice, be sure that you read the prompts carefully so that you understand what they are asking you to argue.
  • In the template, write a thesis sentence for your introductory paragraph. The process of  ___ consists of three steps.
  • Start a new paragraph and write The initial step is ___.
  • Start a third paragraph and write The second step is ___.
  • Start a fourth paragraph and write The final step is ___.
  • Start a fifth paragraph and write In conclusion, ___, ___, and ___ are the steps in the process of ___.
  • Now that you have the blue print for five paragraphs, go back and develop each one of them. Leave your introductory and conclusion paragraphs until last.
  • Once you’ve developed the body paragraphs, go back and finish the introduction and conclusion.
  • Now that you have your rough draft, make sure you have included transitions and words from the language of process.
  • If your paper is not long enough, add examples.
  • Finally, proofread what you have written and edit for grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Homework

  1. Read three Achieve3000 articles of your choice and complete the Activities before midnight on Friday, Nov. 11.
  2. Read pp. 132-148 in Great Writing 5 before Sunday, Nov. 13.

Bonus Credit

  • Reading contest 4 – The contest covers the time period from Saturday, Nov. 5, through Friday, Nov 18. This is for 0.5% extra credit. To receive credit, you muenglish-disclosure-plasmast score 75 or above on Activities for 10 Achieve3000 articles. Only first attempt scores will count.
  • Attend Musical Poetry on Wednesday, November 23, at 12:30-1:50 in W6-500. Write a summary of the event. This is for 0.5% extra credit.
  • Attend Dr. Mai Al Nakib’s talk Anonymity in an Age of Disclosure: Musings on Privacy and Publicity on Wednesday, November 30, at 12:30 in W1-010. Write a summary of the event. This is for 0.5% extra credit.
  • Participate in a poetry writing workshop, December 7, at 12:30 in W1-010. This is for 0.5% extra credit.

What we will do in class on Thursday, Nov 10 – Students will take the midterm writing exam.
