Classification essay practice

What we did today – Students were reminded that feedback is available in Turnitin for Classwork 9 completed on Sunday, October 30.  Students who want to discuss this classwork should see me during my office hours today or Thursday.

Today, students wrote a five-paragraph classification essay and then copied and pasted them into Classwork 10 in MyGUST. Classwork 10 was worth 5 classwork marks, that is, one mark per paragraph.

Homework – Read pp. 102-109 (9.1-9.2.3) and pp. 200-204 (14.6) in the Pearson e-book before Thursday, Nov 3.

What we will do on Thursday, November 3 – Students will revise the essay they wrote for Classwork 10.

Classification paragraph practice

What we did today – Students were reminded that feedback is available in OneNote for the introduction and conclusion classwork completed on Tuesday, October 27.  Students who want to discuss this classwork should see me during my office hours today or Tuesday.

Today’s lesson focused on writing classification body paragraphs and time management when writing body paragraphs. After reviewing the 3.8 paragraph model, students wrote classification paragraphs in OneNote and then copied and pasted them into Classwork 9 in MyGUST. Classwork 9 was worth 3 classwork marks, that is, one mark per paragraph with at least five sentences in the paragraph.

Homework 

  1. Read about revising and editing the essay (pp. 170-176, [13.7-13.10]) in the Pearson e-book before Tuesday, Nov 1.
  2. Read pp. 102-109 (9.1-9.2.3) and pp. 200-204 (14.6) in the Pearson e-book).

What we will do on Tuesday, November 2 – Students will write a timed classification essay. Classwork 10 will be worth 5 marks.

Introductions and conclusions

What we did today – Students were reminded that feedback was available in OneNote for the essay plan completed on Tuesday, October 25.  Students who want to discuss their essay plan work should see me during my office hours on Sunday or Tuesday of next week.

Today’s lesson focused on introductions and conclusions. After reviewing introductions and conclusions in the Pearson Revel e-book, students worked in groups of 2-3 students to write an introduction and a conclusion for the essay plan. One person typed their paragraphs, and that person emailed their work to me at my GUST email address before the end of the class.

Planning the essay

What we did today – Students were reminded that Classwork 8 was marked and that they must notify me by 5 p.m. tomorrow if there is a mistake. Please note that the mark was given for trying rather than for the accuracy of the answers. Consequently, students should read my feedback.

Today, students focused on essay plans. Students worked in groups to write an outline for the following thesis statement: Rather than improving someone’s life, winning the lottery can lead to feelings of guilt, paranoia, and boredom.

          Today, students focused on paragraphs vs essays and the thesis sentence. Students received 1 mark for Classwork 8.

          What we did today – Today’s class was centered on paragraphs. Classwork 7 was on narrowing topics and writing clear topic sentences (pp. 15-20 in the Pearson e-book). Classwork 7 was worth 1 class mark.

            What we did today – The class met in the Library’s computer lab, where students sat for a reading exam worth 15% of the course grade.

                What we will do on Thursday, October 20 – The class will focus on the structure, organization, and development of paragraphs.

                Review for Tuesday’s reading exam

                What we did today 

                1. Students were reminded that Classwork 6 was marked and that they must notify me by 5 p.m. Monday if there is a mistake.
                2. Students viewed a short video showing where the Library’s computer lab is located (N2-102). This is where they will sit for their reading exam on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
                3. Students reviewed for Tuesday’s reading exam by completing practice reading exams.

                Homework 

                1. Review for next week’s reading exam by completing the practice reading quizzes in MyGUST under the week of 9 October – 15 October and 16 October – 22 October.
                2. Read Chapter 2: Developing (pp. 13-30) in the Pearson e-book before class on Thursday, October 20.

                What we will do on Tuesday, October 18 – Students will sit for a reading exam, which is worth 15% of the course grade. There will be two reading passages, with eight multiple-choice questions per passage. The class will meet in the Library’s computer lab (N2-102).

                Inferencing

                What we did today – Students were reminded that Classwork 5 was marked and that they must notify me by 5 p.m. Sunday if there is a mistake.

                Today, students focused on inferencing (pp. 476-482 in Pearson Revel e-book). They watched Learn About How to Make Inferences as You Read. Then, after completing Classwork 6, they worked on several other inferencing activities. Classwork 6 was worth 3 marks.

                Homework 

                1. Review for next week’s reading exam by completing the practice reading quizzes in MyGUST under the week of 9 October – 15 October.
                2. Download Safe Exam Browser and configure it.

                What we will do on Sunday, October 16 – We will practice for the reading exam scheduled for October 18.

                Context clues

                What we did today – Students were reminded that Classwork 4 was marked and that they must notify me by 5 p.m. tomorrow if there is a mistake.

                Today, students focused on using context clues (pp. 476-482 in Pearson Revel e-book). Students received 4 marks for Classwork 5.

                Homework 

                1. Read Chapter 38 in Pearson Revel (pp. 472-484 in the Pearson Revel e-book) before Tuesday, Oct. 11).
                2. Review for next week’s reading exam by completing the practice reading quizzes in MyGUST under the week of 9 October – 15 October.

                What we will do on Thursday, October 13 – We will cover inference as a reading technique and complete Classwork 6. We will use Safe Exam Browser with Classwork 6.
